How to copy and paste to Target devices that use "Launch URL via HTML5" Internal Browser

Overview

Apache Guacamole is a clientless remote desktop gateway that uses HTML5 to access systems via a web browser. For users relying on password managers, copying and pasting complex passwords into a Guacamole session is a practical solution to avoid manual entry errors. This article provides a concise guide to using Guacamole’s built-in clipboard feature to transfer passwords from your password manager to a Target Device (Device Console, PDU, VM, KVM, RDP or Docker). It covers accessing the clipboard and pasting credentials, ensuring a secure and efficient process.

Target device configured to launch URL via HTML5

In this example, a Fortigate VM running in Nodegrid is shown and set it to launch via HTML5 using the Internal Browser.


Process


Lauch the Web URL from the Nodegrid Access page by clicking the Web action button as shown below




A new tab in the browser will appear (make sure pop-up blocker is disabled for this url). e login window will appear



Click on the Username field and input the user name. Then click the field for password, this is an important step. By clicking in the password field, the cursor will remain on the field, ready for the next step in the process.

Click on the '+' sign on the bottom of the screen to expand the icons

It will be displayed as follows:

Now you can click the Text Input icon. 

Open you preferred Password Management software where the complex password is stored and copy the password.
The password on this screen shows the complexity and the reason why copy and paste is important for this use case



Now click on the green field for Text Input on the bottom of the Target device Web field and paste the password.



It will appear momentarily in white text and the disappears. 

 

The password was input in the Password field as shown below
Click login to enter the target device
